Beard care 101: oils, trims and the shape that suits you
From patchy first months to a full, sculpted beard. The routine and the shaping rules our barbers swear by.

A good beard is half genetics and half maintenance. You cannot change the first, but the second is easier than most men think.
Shape for your face
- Round faces look sharper with more length at the chin and shorter sides.
- Long faces balance out with fuller sides and a shorter chin.
- Square jaws suit a rounded, softer shape at the bottom.
Set the two lines that matter
The cheek line and the neckline make or break a beard. The neckline usually sits about one to two fingers above the Adam's apple; set too high, it makes the jaw look weak. Let a barber set both lines, then simply maintain them.
Apply beard oil to damp skin, not just the hair. The itch in the early weeks comes from dry skin underneath, not the beard itself.
Weekly routine
- Wash the beard two or three times a week with a gentle cleanser.
- Oil daily, balm on dry or windy days.
- Brush or comb to train the direction of growth.
- A scissor-shaping visit every three to four weeks keeps it looking intentional.
