How to keep your fade sharp between barber visits

A good fade looks its best for about two weeks. With the right habits and products you can stretch that, without trying to cut it yourself.

Fades are precise by design, which is exactly why they show growth so quickly. The sides grow at the same speed as the top, but a few millimetres change a skin fade far more than they change a long crop.

Know your rebooking window

For skin and low fades, two to three weeks keeps the line crisp. Mid and high fades with more length can stretch to three or four. Plan your next visit when you leave, so you are not stuck with a grown-out cut the week of an event.

Wash less, condition more

Daily shampooing dries out the scalp and makes short hair look dull. Two or three washes a week with conditioner every time keeps the top manageable and the scalp calm.

Barber tip

Avoid tidying the neckline yourself. One slip moves the line up, and it takes weeks to grow back to where your barber set it.

Style with the right product

  • Matte clay or paste for texture and a natural finish.
  • Pomade for slick-backs and side parts with shine.
  • Sea-salt spray before blow-drying for volume on the top.
